Large areas of Maryland and Washington, D.C. were hit by electricity outages on Tuesday afternoon, prompting evacuations at the Smithsonian and forcing Metro stations to run on backup power. (Even the White House and State Department went dark, briefly.) The outage, according to officials, was caused by an equipment failure at a power station in Charles County, Maryland. Around 7,000 customers went without power, according to the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.
