A man who threw acid in the face of a former Miss Italy finalist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by an appeals court in Bologna, Italy, the BBC reports. The woman, Gessica Notaro, has become a national figure in Italy since the horrific attack, which was perpetrated by her ex-boyfriend, Edson Tavares. After breaking up with Tavares, Notaro went to the police to report the ex for stalking her. Tavares was issued a restraining order, but in January 2017, he attacked her with hydrochloric acid, badly scarring her. Since the attack, Notaro has had many reconstruction surgeries, but lost vision in her left eye.
Notaro has become a TV celebrity in Italy, appearing on the country’s version of Dancing With the Stars and speaking out about violence against women. According to Italian media, Notaro’s lawyer said his client was happy with the verdict. “Gessica is satisfied from a human point of view and me from a judicial view,” he said.
