Hours before Nelson Mandela was due to join the curtain-raising of the World Cup in South Africa, he received news that his 13-year-old great-grandaughter, Zenani, was killed in a car crash. Zenani Mandela was on her way home from a concert in Soweto to celebrate the opening of the tournament when her car was struck by a drunk driver. Now, the 91-year-old former president will skip the World Cup celebration in order to grieve with his family—much had been made originally about the importance of his presence in the stadium. "It would therefore be inappropriate for him to personally attend the 2010 Fifa World Cup opening celebrations," a statement from his foundation said.
