The white dress Marilyn Monroe wore for ‘The Seven Year Itch’—the one famously photographed being blown upward by a subway vent—sold for $5.6 million at a Beverly Hills auction Saturday night. It was expected to sell for $2 million. The dress is one of several pieces of Hollywood memorabilia being sold by singer, dancer, and actress Debbie Reynolds. The red-sequined showgirl gown Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes sold for $1.47 million, and one of Charlie Chaplin's bowler hats sold for $135,000. Reynolds, in tears as the items were auctioned off, had started collected the items for a museum, but decided to auction them off when the plans fell through. Collector Keya Morgan said Saturday's bids were "totally crazy, especially in this recession."
