R.I.P.
Marin Mazzie, the Broadway star and three-time Tony nominee, has died of ovarian cancer. Mazzie was 57, and was last seen on Broadway in 2015 in The King and I. Off-Broadway, she was last seen in Terrence McNally’s Fire and Ice at the Classic Stage Company at the beginning of this year. Having made her Broadway debut in 1985, Mazzie was nominated for Tonys for her performances in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion in 1994, then Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty’s 1998 musical Ragtime, and in the 1999 revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate. In more recent years, Mazzie took on the role of Margaret White, Carrie White’s mother and a vicious and unhinged religious fanatic, in the off-Broadway musical version of Carrie in 2012 at MCC Theater’s Lucille Lortel Theatre. Mazzie also used to perform in concerts with her surviving husband, the actor Jason Danieley, who announced her death Thursday.
