Sgt. Charles C. Strong, a member of the elite Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, was killed this week in Afghanistan’s Herat province by a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform. Service officials did not release additional details of the so-called insider slaying, which occurred Monday. Strong, who was 28 and hailed from Suffolk, Virginia, was a critical-skills operator attached to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was a a former military police officer with two deployments to Iraq and a previous tour in Afghanistan. He joined the command last year. Insider attacks have become a growing phenomenon in the later stages of the Afghanistan conflict. Last month, a man wearing an Afghan Army uniform gunned down U.S. Major Gen. Harold Greene at an officers’ school near Kabul.
