On Saturday, hospital officials released the identities of four students who were critically injured during the shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School on Friday. 14-year-olds Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano were both shot in the head by Jaylen Fryberg, also 14, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after he opened fire. Both girls remain in critical condition. Two boys were also wounded by Fryberg, his cousins Nate Hatch, 14, and Andrew Fryberg, 15. Hatch suffered a jaw injury and is in “serious but improving” condition while Fryberg remains in critical condition. One student besides the shooter was killed; her identity has not been released. Police also confirmed on Saturday that a cafeteria worker attempted to stop Fryberg as he opened fire, but did not elaborate on who it was. A student who talked to the Los Angeles Times, however, said it was a woman who “came out and tried to stop him. I heard a shot and saw him on the ground.” The student said he did not believe Fryberg killed himself. “I’m pretty sure it was an accident,” he said, explaining that the gun appeared to go off during the struggle with the cafeteria worker.
