John McCain may have learned a thing or two from his presidential campaign: The Arizona senator is poised for a big victory over primary challenger J.D. Hayworth on Tuesday—a surprising turn of events given that it originally seemed Hayworth might be able to unseat the long-term senator. “It’s over with,” one Arizona pollster tells the The Hill. The paper credits the turnaround to McCain’s “brutally effective campaign,” during which McCain tacked right on several issues, most notably immigration reform. He also began hammering away at Hayworth early on, even before he officially got into the race.
