Chris McDaniel, the tea-party backed Republican who lost a June 24 runoff election to Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran, told CNN on Friday that he plans to challenge the results and accused Cochran of race-baiting in the final two weeks of the campaign. Asked if he had any regrets about the election, McDaniel said he regretted those two weeks when “they called me a racist, they race-baited.” He accused Cochran’s camp of engaging in “scare” tactics like saying that if McDaniel was elected, “welfare would be cut off.” Cochran won the primary runoff election in part by courting black Democratic voters, who are allowed to vote in a Republican primary so long as they did not vote in the Democratic one.
