America’s median household income rose 5.2 percent—to $56,516—in 2015, showing the first growth in the measurement among America’s middle class since 2007. The U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday released the news, with a number of other figures indicating improvement in the economy. The poverty rate dropped to 13.5 percent in 2015, down from 14.8 percent in 2014—meaning 3.5 million fewer Americans below the economic benchmark. The uninsured rate also fell to 9.1 percent, down from 10.4 percent a year earlier.
