In the latest outbreak of the deadly virus, a rare strain of fungal meningitis has killed five people and affected 30 across six states. Called “aspergillus,” the virus has been traced back to spinal steroid injections, which are used to treat back pain. The Centers for Disease Control warns the vaccine may have been administered to people in 23 states, suggesting the virus will continue to spread. The FDA is investigating the outbreak, and the pharmacy center responsible has shut down its operations.
