At least she’s speaking freely? In remarks to the youth wing of her Christian Democratic Union party at a conference this weekend, German Prime Minister Angela Merkel said efforts to “be happy to be living with each other [had] failed utterly,” referencing guest workers who end up staying in the country, many of whom are from Islamic countries. The stance marks a departure from Merkel’s previous liberal stance on immigration, as she faces growing pressure on the issue from the conservative wing of her party. A full 30 percent of Germans recently polled agreed that Germany was “overrun by foreigners.”
