Mexican Feds Investigate Fake Fridas

Forging a Frida would be sacrilegious, but two Mexican antiques dealers may have done just that. A months-long debate over the authenticity of some of Frida Kahlo’s work has reached a legal boiling point. After receiving a complaint from the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Trust, Mexican federal prosecutors have begun investigating the authenticity of artwork published in Finding Frida Kahlo and The Labyrinth of Frida Kahlo, two books about the famous artist’s life that feature papers and paintings owned by Mexican antiques dealers Carlos and Leticia Novola. The couple has denied the allegations, saying that they received the rare works from a carpenter in the 1970s. Will the real Frida please stand up?
