Mexican police have arrested a man they describe as the third-most-powerful leader in the Zetas drug cartel—and he may have been involved in the murder of an American agent, Jaime Zapata, earlier this year. The suspect, Jesús Enrique Rejón Aguilar, is a former special-forces soldier accused of several murders, drug trafficking, and trying to break a patron out of prison in 2004. Authorities say he was Zetas’ boss in central Mexico, including the state where Zapata was killed in February. While Aguilar’s role in Zapata’s death is unclear, he is believed to have been in the state coordinating criminal activities at the time.
