The head of Mexico’s central bank has cited Donald Trump as a major threat to the country as the bank raises interest rates. In an interview with the Radio Formula station on Friday, Banco de Mexico Gov. Agustin Carstens said a victory for Trump in the election would hit the country like a hurricane, “and a particularly intense one if he fulfills what he has been saying in his campaign.” Carstens singled Trump out a day after the central bank raised its prime lending rate by half a percentage point, citing “nervousness surrounding the possible consequences of the U.S. elections, whose implications for Mexico could be particularly significant.” Trump has repeatedly suggested building a wall along the border with Mexico, even telling his supporters in late August that Mexico would be forced to pay for it – “they just don’t know it yet.”
