Michelle Obama: She’s just like us! The first lady was spotted shopping at Target in Alexandria, Va., on Thursday, and her office has since confirmed that she was indeed at the chain retailer. “It is not uncommon for the first lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant, or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates,” her communications director told CBS News. Sure, Obama often dons expensive designer clothes for special occasions—like the Alexander McQueen dress she wore to the Obama administration’s third state dinner earlier this year—but she’s also a fan of affordable retailers like J. Crew and The Gap. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Obama said when it came to retail giants she was “more of a Target shopper” than a Walmart frequenter.
