The Southern Michigan Volunteeer Militia had its annual spring field day last weekend--an "open carry" party, at which members celebrated the group's belief in citizens' right to bear arms. Guns were brandished, camouflage and "Don't Tread On Me" flags were in evidence, and barbecue was consumed. As an added treat: members had on hand the group's "Militia Babes" calendar, part recruiting tool and part fund-raising aid, first brought to national attention in Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine." "From a profit and loss perspective, the calendars are a break-even," says Lou, a leader of the group. "We are not in this to make money." But the calendar, featuring friends of the SMVM, does turn a few heads. Interested parties, take note: the group is now accepting applications for the 2010 version.
