The Missouri State Senate wants to nullify federal gun laws and prosecute agents who attempt to enforce them. Under a bill that the Senate’s General Laws Committee voted on 5-1 last week, federal agents who enforce the nation’s gun laws in Missouri could be fined up to $1,000 and sentenced to up to a year in prison. Among its other provisions, this bill moves to arm public school teachers and staff and lower the minimum age for a permit to carry a concealed weapon from 21 to 19. The bill, however, is more of a symbolic act of defiance in the face of the government than anything, as states are virtually incapable of prosecuting federal officials for doing their jobs under federal law.
