More Than 500 Dead in Turkey

The death toll in Turkey’s magnitude-7.2 earthquake topped 500 on Thursday—100 hours after Sunday’s deadly quake—and officials now estimate that more than 60,000 have been affected. Hundreds are still considered missing, and more than 3,000 buildings have been reduced to rubble, while freezing temperatures have threatened the survivors. Citizens are criticizing officials in the mostly Kurdish region for giving priority assistance to supporters of Turkey’s ruling party. Meanwhile, in the town of Ercis in Van province, rescue workers Thursday pulled a man from rubble who had been trapped for more than 100 hours. Later, a teen was pulled from the rubble 108 hours after the quake struck.
