Good news: The most-wanted Nazi criminal at large has been discovered. Bad news: He will escape punishment, as he died in 1992. Although it was believed that Aribert Ferdinand Heim, a doctor at Buchenwald and two other concentration camps, had escaped to Latin America, German and Israeli investigators have discovered that he was, in fact, living in Cairo, where he had changed his name to Tarek Hussein Farid and converted to Islam. Heim regularly corresponded with and received money from Europe, so investigators are not quite sure how the trail went cold. Crimes he committed include “performing operations on prisoners without anesthesia; removing organs from healthy inmates, then leaving them to die on the operating table; injecting poison, including gasoline, into the hearts of others; and taking the skull of at least one victim as a souvenir.”
