Patricia Smith, the mother of an American killed in 2012 at the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, said she blames Hillary Clinton for the death of her son. Speaking in prime-time on day one of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Smith accused Clinton’s State Department of ignoring requests for more security in Libya and stonewalling her requests for more information surrounding her son’s death. “In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism,” Smith said in a speech that left many delegates in the audience in tears. “But when I saw Hillary Clinton at Sean’s coffin ceremony, just days later, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. Since then, I have repeatedly asked Hillary Clinton to explain to me the real reason why my son is dead. I’m still waiting.” In endorsing Trump, Smith said Clinton belongs in prison for her role after the attack, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens. Clinton said in a March primary debate that Smith’s claims about how she handled the attack are “absolutely wrong.”
