The murder charge against a Georgia woman who gave herself an abortion has been dropped, Dougherty County’s district attorney announced Wednesday. Kenlissa Jones was five months pregnant when she gave birth on her way to the hospital Saturday, and the boy lived for about 30 minutes, officials said. Jones, 23, had been charged with possession of a dangerous drug (Cytotec) and malice murder. Georgia laws mandate that abortions after the first trimester be carried out at a specially licensed facility. “I dismissed that malice murder warrant after thorough legal research by myself and my staff led to the conclusion that Georgia law presently does not permit prosecution of Ms. Jones for any alleged acts relating to the end of her pregnancy,” D.A. Greg Edwards said. Jones’s brother said she didn’t know she was pregnant, and when she did, she didn’t have enough money to obtain a surgical abortion.
