Did he or didn't he, that is the question. In a bid to dull the damage done by a secretly recorded meeting he held with Sun staffers, media mogul Rupert Murdoch has sent letters to two British politicians saying he regrets his word choice in the "highly emotional meeting." Murdoch was recorded as saying paying off police officers for news tips was a tradition of the last "hundred years" and the "culture of Fleet Street." In the letters, Murdoch denies knowledge of these payments, saying they are "completely false." He writes: "I do not minimize the wrongdoings that have gone on in the past at our papers. I remain of the view that our reporters must obey the law…but I also believe that our employees have been singled out for the harshest treatment.”
