Myanmar’s parliament elected Htin Kyaw as president Tuesday, the first civilian to take office after more than 50 years under military rule. Htin Kyaw is a considered a close ally of National League for Democracy party leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is barred from serving as president due to a constitutional clause. The NLD leader has said she would serve in a role above the president. Htin Kyaw defeated another NLD candidate as well as one put forward by the military junta.
