Not since 1881 has the Souris River hit the levels it reached on Friday—and it’s only getting started. The river broke that record at Minot, North Dakota, and the Army Corps of Engineers says it could rise another six feet before cresting early Sunday at more than 15 feet above flood stage. In Minot, shelters are filling as more and more residents leave low-lying ground as the waters approach. The mayor said Friday that 2,500 homes are underwater, with more to come. Other cities have essentially thrown in the towel, deciding that further sandbagging is a futile endeavor.
