North Korea sentenced a U.S. man on Friday to 10 years of hard labor for spying, just a month and a half after University of Virginia student Otto F. Warmbier was handed down a 15-year prison term for allegedly stealing a propaganda banner and “crimes against the state.” Kim Dong Chul, a 62-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in South Korea, was arrested last October in the special economic zone of Rason. The verdict was first reported by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency and Japan’s news service Kyodo. Kim made an alleged confession before reporters last month, claiming he had been paid by South Korean intelligence officers. News of his prison sentence comes after Pyongyang’s failed attempt to launch two mid-range ballistic missiles Thursday. The failed launches prompted a UN Security Council emergency meeting.
