NATO and Afghan forces have killed a former inmate of Guantanamo Bay prison in a nighttime raid. A NATO statement said the former inmate, Sabar Lal Melma, was a “key affiliate” of al Qaeda who was helping organize attacks in Afghanistan and funding the insurgency. Troops surrounded his house last night and shot him dead when he emerged holding an assault rifle. Melma was released in 2007 after five years of detention. According to the Pentagon, 11 percent of released Guantanamo detainees have rejoined the fight.
