The late French photographer Robert Doisneau has re-emerged on the cobblestone streets of Paris thanks to the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation’s exhibition of some never-been-seen images. The Foundation displayed 100 or so photographs from its own collection of works as well as those of other museums and private collections in an effort to show viewers the honest and often humorous street culture Doisneau so admired in France’s capital. “There are several photographs in this show that have always been presented in other exhibitions,” curator Agnès Sire said of the photographer, who was influenced by André Kertész, Eugène Atget, and of course, Cartier-Bresson. “But there are others that have never before been seen.” Among Doisneau’s most famous works is “Le Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville” (or Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville), which depicts a couple kissing amidst the busy streets of Paris, his most beloved subject.
