Critics proved powerless to stop the Pirates franchise, as On Stranger Tides took in $346.4 million worldwide, the fourth-largest global opening weekend ever. The fourth film based on the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean ride made $90.1 million domestically and a record $256.3 million abroad. Only Johnny Depp remains from the original; Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom abandoned the films, while Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane have been introduced as new characters. Bridesmaids came in second with $21 million, its second week in theaters.
