New York City will acknowledge its former role as a major center of the slave trade in the 1700s with a historical marker on Wall Street. “The slaves of that time and place helped build City Hall,” City Councilman Jumaane Williams said. “Their lives should be celebrated and their deaths should be mourned.” The sign will likely be unveiled on Juneteenth (June 19), a holiday commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation that abolished slavery during the Civil War.
