At a New Hampshire debate Monday, Sen. Kelly Ayotte got into an awkward exchange when asked about Donald Trump as a role model. Asked by the moderators “Would you tell children to be like Trump?” Attempting to answer the question, Ayotte awkwardly said: “There are many role models we have. I believe he can serve as president, so absolutely.” Hours later, Ayotte attempted to walk back her remarks, posting on Twitter that she “misspoke” and “Neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have set a good example and I wouldn’t hold up either of them as role models for my kids.” Many GOP senators have struggled in recent months to attempt to answer for the standard-bearer of the party. Ayotte has yet to endorse Trump.
