NHL to Use Concussion Spotters

GOAL

Help identify obvious signs of injury.

The National Hockey League will put concussion spotters at its games this season to help identify symptoms of the brain injury. The designated individual will supplement spotters provided by some teams, though game-play decisions will still be made by coaches and medical personnel. “You’re not really in a position where you’re going to have to stop games,” Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. “But clearly there are some visible signs which a club is mandated to remove a player from the game for evaluation.”Correction: Bill Daly is the NHL’s deputy commissioner. A previous version of this report incorrectly said he is the commissioner.
