South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s husband will be deployed to Afghanistan with the state’s National Guard, the governor’s office said on Monday. Michael Haley is scheduled to leave in December for a year-long deployment. “Our time has come,” Nikki Haley said in a statement. “Our family could not be more proud of Michael and every man and woman who puts on a uniform.” Michael Haley—tapped for his business experience—will be acting as a liaison between the National Guard and local Afghani officials, and a National Guard spokesman said this might be the first time the spouse of a governor has been deployed. Beginning Tuesday, Michael Haley will be training at Fort Jackson.
