North Korea launched two ballistic missiles off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula early Friday, defying UN Security Council sanctions, South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said. Officials in Seoul said one flew some 800 kilometers into the Sea of Japan, while a second left radar screens after just 17 kilometers. North Korea launched two missiles last week, prompting the United States to impose new sanctions on the country. U.S. personnel and South Korean troops are taking part in joint military exercises as well, which has prompted North Korea to warn of a “pre-emptive and offensive nuclear strike.”
