North Korea says it has blown up a nuclear test site in the mountainous region of Punggye-ri. Sky News correspondent Tom Cheshire observed the demolition, which may yet breathe new life into planned talks between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Cheshire said: “We hiked up into the mountains and watched the detonation from about 500 meters away. They counted it down—three, two, one. There was a huge explosion, you just could feel it. Dust came at you, the heat came at you. It was extremely loud.” The North offered to scrap the site this year as part of a diplomatic rapprochement with South Korea and the U.S.—but some observers believe the site partially collapsed after a test in September 2017, rendering it unusable. Independent inspectors were not invited to the demolition.
