A fired Northwestern University professor and an Oxford University staffer accused of fatally stabbing a 26-year-old hair stylist have been extradited to Chicago to face first-degree murder charges following an eight-day manhunt. Wyndham Lathem, a microbiologist who lost his position at Northwestern University last month after fleeing police, is said to have had a personal relationship with the victim, James Cornell-Duranleau, though police have not offered any details on the nature of that relationship. Cornell-Duranleau was found dead in Chicago late last month with more than 40 stab wounds and “mutilations” to his upper body, police said. Lathem allegedly fled after police issued a warrant for his arrest, along with Andrew Warren, a U.K. citizen and Oxford University financial officer who is also accused in the crime. Warren was reported missing in Britain before arriving in the U.S. just days before the alleged killing. The two men surrendered peacefully in California earlier this month and are due to appear in court in Chicago as early as Sunday.
