Anders Breivik, the Norwegian right-wing extremist who has admitted to murdering 93 people, will argue in court on Monday that his actions were “atrocious but necessary”—but he will deny criminal responsibility, according to his lawyer. The court has denied Breivik's request for an open hearing in order to prevent him from publicly airing his extremist views. The New York Times, meanwhile, examines the “parallel life” Breivik constructed while he was planning the massacre: He played World of Warcraft, listened to Europop, watched True Blood, and dined with his mother every Sunday night. His planning left little time for girlfriends, although he has said online he bought two high-class prostitutes a week before the killings.
