Protected by a dozen armed guards, former Arkansas representative and current NRA consultant Asa Hutchinson unveiled a 225-page report detailing the organization’s proposal, “School Shield.” It includes arming at least one staff member with anything from “sidearms, to shotguns, to AR-15s.” Each armed staffer would undergo a 40- to 60-hour firearms-training course, developed by the NRA, at an estimated cost of $800 to $1,000. The American Civil Liberties Union called the plan “radical” and asked Congress to “reject any proposal that militarizes our schools.”
