This is reassuring. Twice just this year, officers have accidentally left open the blast door to their underground command post that holds nuclear-tipped missiles—because they were napping. The Air Force officers, entrusted with keeping the doors closed to prevent intruders entering the area, are not supposed to leave them open while a crew member is asleep. Two launch crew commanders and two deputy commanders were given administrative punishments earlier this year, but in an investigation the Associated Press found numerous problems including a failed safety inspection and officers unfit for duty.
