A plainclothes New York cop was shot in the face in Queens of Saturday after approaching a man on the street, the New York Times reported. The officer was shot around 6:15 pm in Queens Village, the paper reported, when he and another police officer approached a man on foot in their car. The suspect fired into the car, striking one of the officers. After a massive manhunt, a 35-year-old man from the area was taken into custody. The officer is in critical condition, but doctors thought he would live. The shooting comes as the country is transfixed by the protests in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray after his arrest, and the subsequent criminal charging of six officers in connection with his death. It also is a haunting reminder of a similar shooting in New York in December, whe officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot dead by Ismaaiyl Brinsley as they sat in their car. Brinsley had posted earlier that day on social media that he wanted to kill cops. He ended up killing himself as he fled the scene of the shooting.
