A New York newspaper, The Journal News, has taken down a map of gun-permit owners in its coverage area, after weeks of withstanding complaints and even threats against its employees. The move comes on the heels of new state legislation that allows permit holders to request confidentiality and imposes a 120-day moratorium on the publication of permit-holder information. In a letter published Saturday, Journal News publisher Janet Hesson defended the paper’s decision to publish the map and clarified that—even after having to hire armed guards to protect their office—the newspaper’s employees still believe their readers have a right to know where the gun-permit holders in their community are.
