NYC Building Will Separate Poor, Rich

A planned 33-story residential tower on the Upper West Side of Manhattan will offer a mix of luxury condos and affordable low-income rental units, each with a separate entrance to the building. The 219 condos will reportedly face Hudson River, while the five floors of cheaper apartments will be in a building segment that faces away and has a separate entry, elevator, and contractor for maintenance. A Manhattan assemblywoman railed against the project’s “poor door,” saying “separate but equal” is outdated. The building’s developer, Extell, will benefit from tax breaks and millions of dollars in air rights by offering affordable units. Extell says the structures will be connected, but legally separate and required to have different entrances.
