In his weekly address on Saturday, President Obama urged GOP lawmakers to extend the unemployment benefits that are set to expire this month, saying “it shouldn’t be a partisan issue.” The jobless rate in November fell to 7 percent, the lowest since Obama took office. But if Congress doesn’t act before they go on holiday, around 1.3 million Americans will see their unemployment benefits run out. “All because Republicans in this Congress—which is on track to be the most unproductive in history—have so far refused to extend it,” said Obama. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated it would cost about $26 billion to extend the benefits through next year. “Unemployment insurance is one of the most effective ways there is to boost our economy,” said Obama.
