Obama: Let's Fix 'No Child Left Behind'

President Obama on Monday called for an overhaul of No Child Left Behind, former president George W. Bush’s sweeping education-reform law. “The goals of No Child Left Behind were the right goals,” Obama said in a speech in a classroom. “But what hasn’t worked is denying teachers, schools, and states what they need to meet these goals.” Enacted in 2002, No Child Left Behind has since been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans, but when it comes to fixing the law, the parties have different approaches—Democrats back more investment in schools, Republicans have pushed for more local control over decisions. Obama has also faced criticism from unions after he worked to tie teacher pay to classroom performance.
