Sorry, officers. President Obama will announce limits on the type of military-style equipment available to America’s police. After broad public criticism of the response to riots in Ferguson, Missouri, cops will be banned from using weaponized aircraft, tanks, bayonets, and grenade launchers. Obama initially planned to continue supplying the gear, but the AP reports that an interagency group “found ‘substantial risk of misusing or overusing’ items like tracked armored vehicles, high-powered firearms, and camouflage could undermine trust in police.” The federal government will also stop supplying weaponized vehicles, heavy-duty weapons of .50-caliber or higher, explosives, and battering rams.
