In a bid to turn up the heat on North Korea before a critical nuclear-security meeting, President Barack Obama plans to visit the demilitarized zone on Sunday. The White House said the trip will show American support for South Korea as the country squares off against its neighbor to the north over nuclear disarmament. North Korea will not be present at the summit, where Obama will talk with the president of China, a country that the White House says may be able to bring its influence to bear on the recalcitrant North Korean leaders. The precise state of North Korea’s nuclear plan is not known, but the country has on two occasions tested a nuclear device.
