In his first public statement on the matter, President Obama promised to seek the “toughest sanctions” on Iran for its plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington, D.C. He said the U.S. can support all the allegations against Iran, and that members of the Iranian government “were aware of this plot.” One of the suspects, said Obama, was an Iranian-American with “direct links” to and paid by Tehran. “There has to be accountability,” the president said.
