Obama's Supreme Court Shortlist

What’s Next?

Kagan, Wood, and Garland said to lead the pack.

Sadly, there won’t be a “wise Latina” this time, but otherwise the list of likely successors to Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens should look familiar: President Obama is said to have already drafted a shortlist with many of the same names he considered for the seat that eventually went to Sonia Sotomayor. The three frontrunners are Solicitor General Elena Kagan and federal appellate court judges Diane Wood and Merrick Garland. A slew of other names are being tossed around as well. Slate recommends Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren (who is often mentioned as a possible head for the possible consumer-protection agency), and Cass Sunstein. Jonathan Zasloff, meanwhile, has an unconventional but intriguing pick: Newark Mayor Cory Booker.
