Occupy Oakland protesters were met by a significant police presence Tuesday night when they attempted to reclaim Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in Oakland, where they had been staying for two weeks until police forced clearance of the plaza. The group is part of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday tension between the protesters and the police peaked, prompting the police to fire tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowd. "We had to deploy gas to stop people from throwing rocks and bottles at police,'' said Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan, adding that 102 people were arrested.
