Oil Ship Hits Stockholm Archipelago

DEVELOPING

Leaking oil into island network.

The pristine archipelago that makes up Stockholm is under threat Wednesday after a ship carrying 52 tons of oil ran aground and began spilling into the Baltic Sea. While the crew is working to transfer the oil into an intact vessel, there are fears it could sink. “It is too early to know how much damage has been done in the area,” said Jonny Aberg of the Swedish Coast Guard when asked about risk to wildlife. The archipelago is made up of more than 30,000 islands and inlets and is popular among boaters and nature enthusiasts.
